For a game that has spent years being talked about without being played, Grand Theft Auto VI has finally reached a strange point: there is now more to look at than there is to speculate about.
As of September 30, GTA VI is 50 days from its scheduled November 19, 2026 release. Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms.
And honestly, the most interesting part isn't the release date anymore.
It's the footage.
This Isn't Just Another Trailer
Rockstar's August extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. That's an important distinction because Rockstar is no longer relying only on carefully edited cinematic trailers to sell the idea of GTA VI. We're getting a much longer look at the actual game world.
The official GTA VI site has also published 99 screenshots, covering Jason and Lucia, Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Grassrivers and other parts of the world.
That changes the conversation.
There are still plenty of unanswered questions, but we're no longer judging GTA VI from a handful of spectacular shots. There's enough material now to start looking at how Rockstar has built this version of its open world.
Vice City Is Only Part of It
Yes, Vice City is back.
But GTA VI isn't simply a modern remake of the original Vice City setting. The story stretches across the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City sitting inside a much larger setting.
Rockstar's own character profiles also give Jason and Lucia considerably different starting points. Jason grew up around criminals and later worked for drug runners in the Keys. Lucia has just been released from the Leonida Penitentiary and is determined to change her situation.
That gives the game something GTA V didn't have in quite the same way: a story built around two central characters whose relationship is part of the game's core identity.
And that could end up being more important than the size of the map.
Rockstar Is Building an Entire World Around It
Another detail that caught my attention is how much Rockstar is already treating GTA VI as more than just a game launch.
The company has announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a 34-track soundtrack arriving on November 19. Six singles are already available, with artists including Travis Scott, Future, Metro Boomin', PinkPantheress and Keith Richards.
There is also an official Vice City Collection tied to fictional entertainment within the game's world, including merchandise based on the fictional show Macca the Gator.
That sounds like typical GTA madness, but there's a bigger point behind it: Rockstar is already establishing characters, music, brands and pieces of Leonida before players even enter the game.
The Real Question
After all the delays, screenshots, trailers and speculation, GTA VI is finally entering the stage where Rockstar has to turn all of this into an actual playable experience.
We know the date.
We know the protagonists.
We know the setting.
We've seen the game running.
What we don't know yet is the thing that matters most:
What will it actually feel like to spend 100 hours inside Leonida?
We're only 50 days away from finding out.
